The 2025 Volvo XC90 revealed ahead of its launch: New design unveiled, but the engine may not bring any surprises

Volvo's flagship model, the XC90, is set to receive a facelift in September.

Since the beginning of 2024, the slowdown in electric vehicle sales has prompted many automakers, including Volvo, to reconsider their strategies. Although Volvo previously announced plans to transition entirely to electric vehicles by the next decade, the company is now considering running both electric and hybrid models in parallel.

In its latest effort, Volvo will unveil the second facelift of the XC90 on September 4th. The first upgrade occurred in 2019, five years after the current generation of the XC90 was introduced.

The 2025 Volvo XC90 promises to feature "significant updates," offering new interior/exterior designs and advanced technology. One confirmed aspect of the 2025 XC90 is its use of hybrid technology to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. However, it remains unclear whether the vehicle will adopt a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid configuration.

The official teaser for the 2025 Volvo XC90 reveals a top-down view of the front end, where the headlights appear to have some changes compared to the familiar "Thor's hammer" design, though it's difficult to discern specifics from this angle.

In 2022, Volvo registered the design of a large SUV that blends elements of the XC90 and EX90, which could potentially be the upcoming facelifted model. However, this information is hard to verify.

Volvo is confident that the hybrid version of the 2025 XC90 will not negatively impact the sales of the electric EX90 SUV. The EX90 was unveiled in November 2022 but only began production in June 2024 due to challenges in finalizing the software.

Following the launch of the 2025 Volvo XC90, Volvo's lineup of combustion engine vehicles will also receive significant updates to remain competitive.
