Cars 'withdrawing' from Vietnam this year: Diverse segments, all Japanese, some awaiting new versions
Several models have "quietly" disappeared from official websites without any announcements.
Suzuki Ertiga, Ciaz, Swift
Suzuki has been the most aggressive in "streamlining" its product lineup in Vietnam this year. Currently, Suzuki Vietnam's website lists only two models, the XL7 and Jimny, while the Ertiga, Ciaz, and Swift have been removed.
The removal of the Ertiga allows Suzuki to focus its MPV market share entirely on the XL7, a recently upgraded model with several superior features. This move is understandable given the XL7's significantly higher sales compared to the Ertiga, despite both belonging to the same segment.
The Ciaz struggled with poor sales in Vietnam, often appearing on the list of the 10 lowest-selling cars monthly before being discontinued. Even substantial price cuts, sometimes exceeding 100 million VND, couldn't boost its appeal, leaving it unable to compete with rivals like the Vios, Accent, and City.
The Swift, once a standout model for Suzuki in Vietnam, has also quietly exited the market. It remains uncertain if the Swift will return with a new generation in the future.
Toyota Yaris
Among Toyota's lineup, the Yaris posted notably low sales. Before its discontinuation, only 8 units were sold in the first half of 2024. This model shared the same segment as the Swift but offered a significantly larger size.
The Yaris is considered the hatchback version of the Vios, with similar features. However, while the Yaris was imported from Thailand, the Vios is locally assembled in Vietnam. Despite these similarities, the Vios enjoys strong sales, whereas the Yaris struggled to find buyers.
Mazda BT-50
The Mazda BT-50 has been removed from the company's product listings online. According to dealers, the move may signal preparations for a new version's arrival in Vietnam. The updated BT-50 is already available in Thailand, which previously served as the supply source for the Vietnamese market.
BT-50's sales have been underwhelming in the pickup segment. Its new version, with significant upgrades, could help improve its performance in Vietnam. Meanwhile, competitors like the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton have recently received substantial updates, increasing competition.
Lexus IS
Less than four years after launching its new generation, the Lexus IS has been discontinued and removed from the brand's product listings. Lexus has not provided a reason for discontinuing the IS in Vietnam, though low sales are likely a factor.
The IS directly competes with the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, its price is considerably higher, largely due to high import taxes. By contrast, both the 3-Series and C-Class are locally assembled, allowing for more competitive pricing.
